| The Local Area:
With the delights of the English
Lake District, Eden
Valley and Hadrian's Wall on your doorstep,
you will never be short of things to do when staying at Brownrigg
Hall.
For walkers, cyclists or motorists the Lake District offers some
of the most beautiful scenery in the World. With fells such as Skiddaw
and Blencathra to climb and lakes such as Derwentwater and Bassenthwaite
to sail and windsurf on, there is no shortage of fun for the adventurous.
If you prefer a more relaxed pace, the north Lakeland towns and
villages provide countless places to explore and you will never
be far away from places to eat and drink. The market towns of Keswick
and Penrith are only 20 minutes away and the city of Carlisle
with its Castle,
Cathedral
and Tullie
House Museum, a similar distance.
Hadrian's Wall, a World Heritage Site, is also within striking
distance of us, together with the recent Hadrian's Wall National
Trail which runs the full length of the wall from west to east coast.
Locally, the picturesque villages of Caldbeck
and Hesket Newmarket are only a short walk or drive away. Caldbeck
(0.5 miles walk, 1 miles by car) is well known for its flowers and
its former industrial heritage, now long gone. Priest's Mill with
it's craft shops and Watermill
Restaurant & tea-room is a great place to stop
off and there is also the Oddfellow's Arms in the village centre
which offers a fine range of Jennings real ales, good food and excellent
company. There are also other local services available such as village
shop, post office, hairdressers. Cricket, Bowls & Tennis are
also available locally.
Walk straight out onto the fells from Brownrigg Hall and explore
the delights of this quieter, less well known part of the English
Lake District. Take in the breathtaking views of the Northern Fells
and walk for miles without seeing a soul. Perfect for relaxing and
getting away from it all. The surrounding fells and woodlands of
Caldbeck are easily accessible on foot and there are many signed
footpaths.
Just up from the village duck pond (situated in an old clay dubs),
there is a popular short walk which follows the river up the
Howk, a limestone gorge containing beautiful waterfalls
and the picturesque ruins of the old bobbin mill. The Bobbin Mill
once had the largest waterwheel in the country, at 3 feet wide,
and a 42 feet diameter.
The Cumbria Way also passes through the village as well as two
long distance cycle routes nearby, namely the
C2C
(Coast to Coast) and the Reivers Route.
Hesket Newmarket (2.5 miles) has it's own brewery located at the
Old Crown Inn.
And should the weather turn wet, make use of our local knowledge
about such local visitor attractions as Rheged,
Greystoke
Castle, Hutton-in-the-Forest and the Theatre
by the Lake in Keswick. There is also Keswick
Spa & Pool, Trotters
World of Animals, Mire House, Dodd Wood Forestry
Trails, and Rookin
House Activity Centre all within strking distance
of Brownrigg Hall. See the Cumbria
Tourist Board website for more information.
Caldbeck really is an ideal base for exploring many parts of the
North West of England.
